There’s nothing like a hot water heater flooding your house to make you realize that you don’t remember where the main water shut off is located. Or having the lights go out in a section of the house and you don’t know where to find the breaker panel. Or even having the air conditioner stop working because the overflow pan is full and you didn’t realize you even had an overflow pan.
When you move into a new home, take the time to find the location of the following systems:
- Electrical panel (aka, the breaker box)
- Water main shutoff
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Alarm system panels
- Main HVAC system, returns and overflow pans
If you haven’t moved in yet, you can have your home inspector, the builder of new construction or even the current owner point all of this out.
Knowing your house makes taking care of it just a bit easier.
